Rosan Bosch Studio has created an innovative learning environment based on a unique communication concept for the New Library in Kolding that transforms the library into a cultural incubator for the region
Kolding New Library
As part of a large-scale renovation of the new Library in Kolding Rosan Bosch Studio has created a unique concept design that rebrands the library as a public platform for cultural development in Kolding municipality.
The library’s most striking characteristic is the lighthouse with large-scale blue ‘beams’ spreading throughout the building. The concept design imagines beams sweeping around horizontally and vertically cutting through the program of the building and illuminating its collection, while at the same time enveloping areas for exhibition of current local topics.
The unique communication and curating concept allows for new and innovative ways of curating themes and exhibiting public displays of various cultural initiatives, as well as targeted issues concerning culture in the broadest sense. The initiative derives from the belief that promoting local cultural initiatives at the library, in an inspiring, transformative and playful way will motivate all age groups to come together and learn new things through sudden curiosity and wonder.
The design is developed to inspire people of all ages, through a playful and inspiring learning environment that motivates and inspires children and adults to seek new knowledge. Adults can concentrate on exploring topics in the 'Rocking chair park', follow up on the news on a tablet while riding a bike or participate in lectures on the large-scale staircase in the main hall, while teenagers enjoy a cafe latte resting on a light beam in the library cafe or further exploring topics on Google in the IT-cafe.
The library design encourages all age groups to interact with different dynamic learning zones that are designed to support different learning styles. The innovative concept design activates the body and mind, by integrating physical movement, knowledge and rest in different spatial solutions.
